Best Wireless Router FAQ:
My laptop was custom built a few years ago. When I had Windows XP loaded on it about two years ago, I was told that its still a nice machine. I assume that means its pretty up to date. The only thing I need is a wireless router so I can access the internet with it when I travel.

Ok. you need a wireless network card… not a router. A wireless network card talks to the router…. which is on the source of the internet.
Most hotels offer free wireless, but if you need to be in range of the hotel. If that’s not what you’re talking about, you might want to look into Cingular’s Wireless Internet, it has it’s own card.
You would not install a router in a laptop…
You would install a Wireless adaptor, which would allow you to *connect* with a router, elsewhere.
For most laptops, the best type to fit is a PC-card or PCMCIA card type… they fit in the card slot, usually on one side just under the keyboard, but your system may vary.
You could also fit one which connects to a USB port, but these tend to be more easily damaged, since they stick out, while the PC card version is almost all inside the case, other than the antenna stub.
Most of the hotspots you want to connect at will be able to handle all the various options, 802.11a, b, or g… If you can afford it, get a Pre-N adaptor, which will also work with the older standards, but will give you better performance if you find a hotspot also using N
Follow the instructions, run the disk, plug in the adaptor and you’re all set…
netgear or dlink is the best either pcmia card or the usb. or pci for desktop.
